What is Laser Engraving?

Laser Engraving is the art of carving a design into a hard surface. It can be done with a CNC router, but most efficiently using a CNC laser cutter, which allows a sophisticated engraving.

CNC engraving can be used for adding a serial number to a part, other times it is a decorative artistic addition.

Engraving can be done on various materials:

  • Wood

  • Plastics

  • Acrylics

  • Metals

  • Glass

  • Marble

Lasers can be used to engrave in two ways: It can cut the material or it can discolor it in a distinctive way using a process called Laser Marking.

When laser cutting, we use a stronger more intense beam to cut through the material. For laser engraving we reduce the intensity of that beam.

Lasers work by heating the material they’re cutting or marking. The material is vaporized by the heat of the laser, therefore, most materials will produce smoke and fumes when this is done. Consequently, the door should always be closed while the laser cutter is operating, and ventilation is very important for carrying the fumes outside.

Laser engraving can be ideal for adding the following to any part / material:

  • Text

  • Logos

  • Date / time stamps

  • Serial numbers

  • Barcodes

  • Data Matrix codes

  • Other important manufacturing information
