Our customers frequently request us to design signs, logos, displays, and exhibits in a way that gives the impression of suspension without any visible support.
Is it magic? Not exactly, but it does require a touch of magic in the fabrication process.
Matrial Charecteristics:
Acrylic is a clear transparent rigid synthetic plastic, also known as Plexiglass.
It is recognized for its strength and clarity as well as for being lightweight, durable and for resisting harsh weather conditions.
What is the acrylic used for?
For creating that floating-like suspended in the air appearance we quite often use acrylic backing, acrylic plates or bases as well as acrylic tubes. We also use the acrylic as divider for fabricating signs in tiers
These photos showcase some projects we made with the acrylic serving as a clear backing. The acrylic was precisely cut around the letters and the shapes to facilitate the floating effect.
In some cases, we need to use the whole rectangular sheet of acrylic, or a large part of it to use as backing.
We either glue the letters/logos onto the acrylic or we use screws and pins as well in case the sign is big or heavy and requires more support.
In those instances where the whole sign is quite heavy, we prefer fabricating it also with a base to hold the weight, as yopu an see in some of these photos below:
Clear acrylic is also great as a divider between the tiers.
There are instances where we use the foam itself as a divider, however, the acrylic being transparent giving it a cleaner look
Some fabrications require a combo of some methids alltogeher:
The dot on top of the letter "i" is a great example for the need to use some sort of transparent material for creating the letter.
Small acrylic piece serves as a great solution in this case.
Here is a sign we made for "IMPACT" company for their 2018 company summit, as well as a sign letters for 2019 Women's "Be Invincible" summit
Sometimes, the best way to produce this floating suspended-like effect is to create the logos, letters and signs with acrylic tubes.
We cut small holes inside the styrofoam where the tubes can run into.
We pour 5min epoxy glue inside the holes and then attach the tubes. The epoxy along with the tubes make sure the construction will be stable and strong enough to support the weight.
